Crab Hotpot Cartoon

Chris Freund and Mekong Capital have always embraced storytelling as a way to deliver impactful corporate messages and lessons. Crab Hotpot is a 68-page fictional book written by Chris himself published in January 2022. The story, though fictional, draws from real experiences at Mekong Capital, bringing to life the challenges and dynamics of workplace relationships through colorful crab characters. In a creative move to share organizational stories, Chris has transformed his 2022 book “Crab Hotpot” into an engaging animated cartoon.

The animation, like the original book, is expected to resonate with executives who work in any corporate environment. “I wanted to put our team’s attention on what wasn’t working, and what would work,” Chris explains. Most of the crabs represent a real person who is a current or former employee of Mekong Capital – including Chris himself.

The Story Behind Crab Hotpot

The inspiration came during the Covid lockdown, when Mekong Capital faced communication challenges. Team members expressed concerns about alignment and empowerment, offering various solutions that seemed to compound rather than solve problems. While everyone had good intentions, they were limited by their individual perspectives.

The animated adaptation emerged from Chris’ desire to help people recognize their behavioral patterns. Through the metaphor of crabs, team members can now visually identify their own tendencies and behaviors. The colorful animation has made the story even more accessible, with Mekong Capital staff readily identifying themselves in the various crab characters, leading to self-transformation and improved communication.
